The much-awaited sequel to the 1993 cult classic ‘Khal Nayak’ has officially entered development. Titled ‘Khalnayak Returns’, the project was announced during a grand event held in Mumbai on April 24. The makers also unveiled a teaser introducing Sanjay Dutt once again as the iconic anti-hero Ballu Balram.The teaser quickly generated strong reactions online. Fans praised Sanjay Dutt’s rugged new appearance and the return of the memorable background theme associated with the original film.Since veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai directed the original blockbuster, many initially expected him to helm the sequel as well. However, the filmmaker later clarified that he would not be directing the new film.
Sanjay Dutt approached Rajkumar Santoshi
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, Sanjay Dutt personally wanted filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi to direct the sequel. The actor reportedly believed Santoshi’s understanding of commercial entertainers made him a suitable choice for a large-scale project like Khalnayak Returns.The report stated, “Sanjay Dutt was keen that Rajkumar Santoshi should direct Khalnayak Returns. He felt that Raj ji has an understanding of commercial cinema and would be able to do justice. Moreover, the two powerhouse, talented individuals have never worked together. Hence, Sanjay Dutt felt that it would be great to finally join hands with Rajkumar Santoshi, that too for a special project. Accordingly, he met the director and offered him the film.”The collaboration would have marked the first time Sanjay Dutt and Rajkumar Santoshi worked together on a feature film.
Why Rajkumar Santoshi declined the film
Despite the offer, Rajkumar Santoshi reportedly decided against taking up the project because of his packed professional schedule. The filmmaker is currently busy completing Lahore 1947 starring Sunny Deol.The report further mentioned, “However, Rajkumar Santoshi politely and respectfully declined the offer. He’s currently busy providing final touches to his film Lahore 1947, starring Sunny Deol. He’s also written scripts that he wants to pitch to Sunny as well as Aamir Khan. Hence, he told Sanjay Dutt that he doesn’t have the time to direct Khalnayak Returns.”The filmmaker reportedly conveyed his decision respectfully while appreciating Sanjay Dutt’s confidence in him.
Rajkumar Santoshi praises Sanjay Dutt’s new look
Although he declined the project, Rajkumar Santoshi reportedly appreciated the teaser and praised Sanjay Dutt’s powerful screen presence as Ballu Balram.The report added, “However, Rajkumar Santoshi was touched by Sanjay Dutt’s gesture. He wished him all the best and appreciated his look and swag in the intro teaser. Meanwhile, Sanju sir is now considering other filmmakers to direct Khalnayak Returns.”Early visuals from ‘Khalnayak Returns’ suggest that the sequel will present an older and more dangerous version of Ballu Balram. The character appears more intense and hardened compared to his earlier appearance in the 1993 original.Meanwhile, ‘Khal Nayak’ remains one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic action dramas.
