Nearly four years ago, Ahmedabad’s Kshama Bindu made national headlines. Dressed in a traditional red lehenga, she resembled a picture-perfect bride. But there was a twist: she was marrying herself in India’s first case of sologamy, in an attempt to break free from gender norms and patriarchy.
A lot has changed for Bindu, who now goes by the name Mukunde and identifies as a trans-masculine person. After years of suppressing his masculinity, he had recently decided to embrace it by finally gathering the courage to undergo hormone replacement therapy, and lining up plans to change his gender to male on his identity documents.
