WNBA fans will never see Paige Bueckers’ stunning double braids hairstyle. The Dallas Wings star recently shared that she buried the hairstyle for good. Paige Bueckers’ hairstyle decision caught fans off guard, but the reasoning runs deeper than fashion. The Dallas Wings guard tied the choice to a moment that did not go the way she hoped. Bueckers’ look became part of her identity at UConn Huskies women’s basketball. She has never been one to overplay superstition, yet this time, it stuck. A familiar style came back for a reason. It left for one too. The style looked like a nostalgic return quickly turned into a quiet farewell.

The double braids made a brief return during the Final Four semifinal between UConn and the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball on April 3. It was Paige Bueckers’ first time experiencing that stage as an alum, and she wanted to reconnect with a version of herself that once thrived there.“Honestly, I wanted to bring it back because I was hoping it would bring good vibes for the UConn game. It was my first Final Four as an alum, so I just wanted to feel like I was still a part of the team and I was still here,” she told PEOPLE in an exclusive. “So I think that’s basically the premise of why I did it.”The idea felt right in the moment. The result did not follow. UConn fell 62-48, and for Bueckers, that was enough to close the chapter on the look that once defined her college run.“No, no. I don’t think actually anybody will ever see them again,” the 2025 NCAA champion shares. “Because we lost,” she explains. The hairstyle, in her words, was “a good vibe” for what it represented. But some associations are hard to shake, even for an athlete used to moving on.

While the braids are gone, Bueckers is not reinventing herself entirely. Her current preference remains simple and consistent. A slicked-back ponytail has become her go-to, a look that fits both her rhythm and routine as she prepares for another WNBA season. She is also staying loyal to her blonde shade, recently refreshing it after the tournament in Phoenix through her partnership with Madison Reed. The color, known as UConnic Blonde, has become part of her image just as much as her game.“It’s been a long time since I got my hair done, so my roots were pretty bad. So it’s good to be back blonde for sure,” she told the outlet.Beyond style, Bueckers is turning her attention back to basketball. With a new head coach in Jose Fernandez and roster changes ahead, she sounds energized about what is coming next in Dallas.
