‘Karuppu’ created massive buzz ahead of its theatrical release, even after facing last-minute release troubles. The film was originally scheduled for release on May 14, but unexpected financial and production issues delayed it. Despite receiving permission for 9 AM shows from the Tamil Nadu government, several theatres could not screen the film as planned. After continuous efforts from the makers and reported financial support from Suriya, the film was finally released on May 15. The release drama shocked fans, but audiences continued to support the team online.
‘Maasani Amman’ to ‘Karuppu’
Interestingly, the project did not begin as a Suriya film. As reported by Movie Tamil, director RJ Balaji originally planned the story as a female-centric film titled ‘Maasani Amman’, with Trisha Krishnan in the lead role. The script reportedly focused on devotion, justice, and emotional conflicts linked to the folk deity Maasani Amman.Later, RJ Balaji narrated the story to Suriya after adding commercial and mass elements for fans. Suriya reportedly liked the script immediately, and the project slowly transformed into a larger action entertainer. Soon after, ‘Karuppu’ producers joined the project.
‘Karuppu’ release shifts
The film officially began with a pooja ceremony at Masani Amman Temple in late 2024. Initially, Oscar-winning composer A. R. Rahman was expected to compose the music. Later, young composer Sai Abhyankkar replaced him.The title ‘Karuppu’ and teaser were released on Suriya’s birthday and received a strong response online. The makers first planned the film for a Diwali release. Later, the release shifted to Pongal 2026. But after ‘Jana Nayagan’ locked the Pongal slot, the team changed plans again and moved toward a summer release.
‘Karuppu’ release delay shocks fans
Even with strong advance bookings and huge expectations, ‘Karuppu’ faced unexpected hurdles before release. It was also reported that finance and production problems with Hombale Films delayed the process. As a result, many theaters were forced to cancel the early morning show on May 14, disappointing many people who wanted to witness the film’s launch. However, these problems were resolved, and the film was released on May 15. The film underwent many changes; its first name was ‘Maasani Amman’.
