The San Diego Padres have decided to move on from veteran outfielder Nick Castellanos. On Wednesday, the club designated Castellanos for assignment, ending a short stint that never went the way either side had hoped. The move came just one day after Castellanos returned to Philadelphia, where he received a warm welcome from fans before the Phillies’ 3-2 victory over San Diego on Tuesday night.The decision was not entirely surprising. Castellanos struggled to make an impact with the Padres this season and was unable to find the form that once made him a two-time All-Star. In 39 games, he batted .191 with a .560 OPS, four home runs, and 20 RBIs. With San Diego looking to strengthen its roster during a competitive season, the team chose to make a change and create space for another player.

Castellanos joined the Padres after being released by the Philadelphia Phillies in February. According to the Associated Press, Philadelphia cut ties with the veteran outfielder before the start of spring training despite still owing him $20 million for the final year of his five-year, $100 million contract.San Diego took a low-risk chance on the experienced hitter. The Padres only had to pay him the league minimum salary of roughly $780,000 for the 2026 season. The hope was that a fresh start could help Castellanos rediscover the offensive production he showed during some of the best years of his career.That turnaround never happened. While he had occasional bright moments, consistent production proved difficult to find. His batting average remained below .200, and he struggled to provide the power and run production the Padres were looking for from a veteran bat.Even so, Castellanos experienced a memorable moment during his return to Philadelphia. Although he was not in the starting lineup on Tuesday, Phillies fans welcomed him back warmly. The organization also played a short video tribute recognizing his four seasons with the club. The video featured several highlights from his time in Philadelphia, including some of his notable sliding catches. Castellanos acknowledged the crowd by tipping his cap toward the fans.To fill the roster spot, the Padres selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Samad Taylor from Triple-A El Paso before Wednesday’s game. The move gives Taylor an opportunity at the major league level while the Padres continue searching for the right combination as the season moves forward.
