Fans attending a special screening of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ at SXSW London received an the ‘surprise’ they were promised, when Robert Downey Jr made an appearance alongside filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, and MCU co-stars Anthony Mackie and Winston Duke.
Russo Brothers on next chapter of MCU
During a discussion prior to the screening, the Russo Brothers hinted at significant developments awaiting audiences in the next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including changes to the iconic superhero lineup. Anthony Russo teased that the Avengers team audiences know may not remain the same for long. “You’re going to see some shifting and changing in the Avengers. Get ready for it,” he said.
Russo Brothers on filming with ensemble cast
The directors, who previously helmed ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, also spoke about the challenges of managing the sprawling ensemble cast of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. “We understand how to tell stories with multiple characters,” Anthony explained. “A lot of that has to do with very subtle POV shifts throughout the story. If Thor, when he lands, accidentally cuts [Sebastian] Stan’s head off… That’s how close those points of view are to each other, and that’s all very calibrated, from a protocol standpoint.“
Joe Russo on Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom
Joe Russo also offered a glimpse into Robert Downey Jr’s upcoming portrayal of Doctor Doom as one of Marvel’s most iconic villains. He said, “I would say Doom hits that sweet spot between being very specific and unique to the original story that happens within this film but also delivering on what the most awesome things are about Doom in the comics.”
Robert Downey Jr on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Downey Jr, who is set to return to the Marvel Universe after famously portraying Tony Stark/Iron Man for more than a decade, addressed fan expectations surrounding the project. Reflecting on the challenge of following two of Marvel Studios’ most successful films, he said, “What we’ve been laboring so hard and long over [the past year] is… we can’t beat it and we can’t stand on the shoulders of these two giants of ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ so we’re literally zeroing out the board.““We’re going to try and earn your trust and respect all over again. And with the likes of these fellas, I think we have a pretty good shot.”
