Ahmedabad: Six-year-old dies after mother, sibling jump into canal

Ahmedabad: A 6-year-old boy died on Friday while his mother and younger brother were rescued after they entered the Narmada main canal near Sherisa village in Kalol taluka of Gandhinagar district following a domestic dispute. Santej police are probing the case after a complaint was lodged on Sunday.According to the complaint, the 24-year-old woman had an argument with family members at her residence earlier in the day. After the dispute, she left the house with her two sons. Her husband, who was at work at the time, was informed about the situation and remained in contact with her on the phone for some time.Police said that during a conversation, the woman told her husband that she was leaving with the children. Worried about her whereabouts, he immediately began searching for her while continuing to call her on her mobile phone. However, after some time, the phone became unreachable.Later in the evening, the husband received a call from an unidentified person informing him that a woman had left a mobile phone on the embankment of the Sherisa Narmada canal and had entered the canal along with two children.The information prompted family members to rush to the spot. Local residents present near the canal also joined the rescue efforts. According to the complaint, the woman and her younger son, aged 18 months, were rescued from the water and brought out safely. Emergency services were called, and both were shifted to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital.However, the older child, a 6-year-old boy, was swept away by the strong current of the canal and could not be located immediately. Search operations were launched in the area, and later in the day, his body was found in the Narmada canal near Ramnagar.Police said the body was sent for post-mortem examination. After the recovery of the body and completion of the funeral rites, the child’s father approached Santej police and lodged a complaint.Based on the complaint, police have registered a case and initiated further investigation. Officers are recording statements of family members and others present at the scene. Police officials said they are examining the sequence of events leading up to the incident and gathering all relevant evidence as part of the ongoing probe.
